Hello,

I have a Dell Diemnsion XPS R450, 384meg RAM, Adaptec 39160 SCSI, Seagate
SX118202LS 18 gig.

After running setup of SBS2003, system goes to reboot but it just hangs
after display of the SCSI banner. I boot from CD to get setup started and i
can boot from floppy, but if i take out floppy and cd, it never boots from
scsi hard drive.

I downloaded latest flash bios from dell.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tony

You may need to boot the Windows 2003 CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very
important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive
controller detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later
you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2003 driver
for your scsi controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2003 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom to avoid unexpected drive letter
assignments with your new install.

You may also need to tell your system and or controller bios what device to
boot from.

Hi Dave. Thanks for your reply.

I tried your procedure and it did not help. Still doing the same thing.
I did tell the bios to boot from the scsi hard drive.

Any other suggestions ?

Thanks again,
Tony

Are you telling us that when the system bios loads the controller bios it
hangs? If so it may be a hardware configuration problem or the hardware may
have failed. If not then tell us more.

I'm not putting it in those words, but that sounds right.
I'm not sure of what else i can tell you. It's a 39160 with an ultra160
cable attached to seagate sx118202ls. At the time of sbs setup, all ide
drives are disconnected except the CD. It also has an Intel pro1000MT in
another pci slot. The phoenix bios was just updated.

What else can i tell you ?

You may also want to verify that the scsi bus is correctly terminated, that
the drive jumpers are correct, that no duplicate drive ID's exist, and that
a boot device has been set in controller bios.

Also, as it is starting up, the Adaptec scsi information displayed show the
hard drive on the "A" channel with the correct seagate disk as ID 0. Then
it just leaves a blinking cursor in upper left corner of black screen, the
activity light on the seagate stays on constantly, but nothing ever happens.

See what controller bios has to say about it.

What happens when you use a new scsi cable with a new terminator? When
you press ctrl A the Adaptec utility opens up ok? When you remove the
Adaptec controller card the computer seems to boot up ok to a floppy?

Hi Tony,

I once ran into the same problem.

I had to Update the Harddisk and tried it the 'lazy' way: ghosting the small
Harddisk to the Large Harddisk. After the Ghost the new large Disk 'Looked'
perfect and I transferred the new Harddisk to the old Server.

It did not Boot, but when I started from CD and checked the Partition, it
all "looked" in order. Active partition etc. was OK.

Several hours later I decided to delete the partition, create a new
partition and format it. Rebuild the whole SBS2000 and as a miracle it all
worked PERFECT !
