Anybody who thinks they know computers, here is a test.
If anyone can answer this then, well your awesome at
computers. Basically my computer will not boot. It gets
to a blue screen which says the follow and then tries to
restart.

This restarting process happens infinitely, in other
words I can't get into windows 2000.

Also the cd-rom doesn't work anymore. So I can't use the
cd to get the file. I should also note I have a laptop so
replacing the cd-rom is out of the question because
Compaq sux.

I tried downloading a boot disk for win2000 and it almost
worked but said the ntoskrnl.exe file was corrupt and
that I needed to install it again.

How do I do this on my laptop if I can't use the cd-rom
(and I can't replace it cause Compaq can bite my ass) how
can I recover that file????

I hear that there are 4 disks or something that can be
used in this situation. I really don't know. Somebody

I had a simular problem. I had to install a PARALLEL
install of Win2k. Using that other install I would remove
one of the drivers (.sys files) and copy to a new
location. I used a folder called "bad" under the driver
folder. I had 130+ drivers and luckily it was one of the
first files. But after you remove the driver restart to
the origonal OS. It will be tidious but worth a try.

But my cdrom does not work STILL!!!! I haven't got that
fixed.

I don't know the memory addressing stuff, but if you
changed something in the registry, it could screw you 'til
you fix it. If you have a backup of the reg, (saved
through Windows backup (as checked box when you make an
emergency boot disk)), you can boot from your installation
CD, then (R)epair, then (C)onsole.

Console will let you into C:\ and C:\%systemroot% and
subdirectories. Assusing your systemroot is WINNT, go to
C:WINNT\system32\config and copy DEFAULT, SAM, SECURITY,
SOFTWARE, and SYSTEM with different extentions, like .LST
(Last).

Then go to C:\WINNT\repair\regback and copy those same
files to C:\WINNT\system32\config. Then reboot.

The first thing that you will need will be a Win98 boot floppy. If you have
had a win98 machine, you may have one laying around. If not, you will have
to get a friend or a tech to make one for you. Boot with the Win98 boot
floppy. When it gives you a choice, select with CD-ROM support. If you can't
get this far, you have a hardware problem. Once the computer has booted, put
the Win2000 CD into the drive and then change to that drive and run setup.
Windows will try to do a repair. If that doesn't get you going, you may have
to do a complete install. If you can't access the drive, that could also be
a hzrdware problem.

Examine your Win2k CD on another machine. There is a folder with 4 floppy
images, and a program to create them. Boot the floppies on the other machine,
and choose repair then recovery console.

You should run chkdsk. I am not sure if ntoskrnl is corrupt or some other
file. It is difficult to fix things without a CD.
