Can't Add/Remove any games controllers

I have just finished installing XP Pro on my new computer, got all updates
etc.

Now I want to setup my joystick so I plug it in to the USB port. I notice it
appears in the game controllers list however it is listed as 3 axis 4 button
which is incorrect, so I try to remove it. I click remove and get asked if I
am sure, so I click yes. I then get an error message "The device you have
selected can not be removed from here. Please use the device manager."

Ok I think, unplug the joystick and it disappears from the list. I then
click "Add", select 2 axis 4 button joystick, click ok and I get an error
message again "Your gameport or gameport drivers are not properly configured.
Please consult the device manager."

Any ideas? All help greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Tom

It is possible that the circuitry inside the joystick is in fact for a
3-axis stick, but that the additional axis is not used in your particular
stick. Does the joystick work when installed in the manner that wants to
be? The concept od using common chips for different applications is not
new.

But why would this stop me adding/removing devices?

Did you try to remove it from the Device Manager or just in the Game Controllers Menu?

You never said that there was a problem when it installed as a 3-axis
joystick, only when you forced it to a 2-axis. Unplugging the device
doesn't uninstall it. You presumably didn't follow the instructions and
uninstall it from device manager (which you have to do while it is plugged
in).

Hi david,

I tried to remove the joystick from the game controllers menu. I don't know
what the error message wants me to do in device manager!

In Device Manager expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
Right click on the device you want tot uninstall.
Click Uninstall in the popup menu.

If you still have problems uninstalling the device:
Boot to Safe Mode.
Uninstall the device in Device Manager and close out of DM.
Disconnect the device.
Open either MyComputer or Explorer.
Delete the contents of the folders:
c:\documents and settings\your user name folder\local settings\temp
c:\windows\prefetch
c:\windows\temp

Do not empty the trash just yet.
Close out when done and reboot.

If all goes well for a day or 2, empty the trash.
