Can't add new hardware?

Using XP-Home
Every internal device that i attempt to install is
initially detected by windows but after going through the
driver install after which i get an error message saying
that there has been a problem and the device is not
installed.
This happens even when using signed XP drivers.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?
