Can't add new files to CD-R, message says "read only"

I wrote some files to a CD-R, and did not record them as read-only. When I
try to add files to that CD-R, I get an error message saying the disc is
read-only.

Same thing happened when a friend gave me a CD-R he had written on. My CD RW
drive won't let me add any files to it, saying that the CD-R is read only.

How do I fix this? I'm using XP SP3. I recently started using Roxio 10, but
neither my friend nor I used Roxio to record the CD.

Thank you.

Once you close the CD-R then you cannot add anything anymore. That is why you got
that message. You would need to use a CD-RW CD to do what you want to accomplish

Once you burn anything to a CD-R, that's it. You cannot add or erase files.

If you burn a file to a DR-RW and then want to add another file, you need to
save the first file, erase the disk, and the burn the original file and the
new file at the same time.

Have you considered using flash drives for projects that need constant
updating?

You can add if you use multisession, if there is still room on the disc, and you
haven't
finalized it.

Back when CD-R's were expensive (early 90's), I would add data over
time in multiple sessions until the disk was full, then finalize it.

Until it was finalized, you could see the unclosed sessions if you had the
proper driver loaded (usually came with your burning software). Roxio
should handle this, but the inbuilt CD-R ability that comes with the OS won't.

Glad you beat me to the response; Hagen's always giving half-fast
answers like that. He's the group's chief misinformationist. If you're
new (I don't recoginze your nick off hand) he also hates to be
corrected; ignore his flames if he takes off as he usually does; he'll
go away. Too bad because there was a time he gave good answers or at
least made good attempts..

So I see. Thank you, folks.

I had not considered flash drives. That is a good tip.

I stand corrected. Apparently clicking "Done" is Sonic's way of saying
"Finalize". I was not even aware of that.
