I'd like to change my User Name on an old hand-me-down computer running
Windows 2000.

On the Start menu it says "Log Off anonymous" ("anonymous" apparently being
the name of my default User account). When I boot up, I don't ever see a log
on dialogue box; the computer always just automatically boots directly to
the Windows Desktop without asking me to enter a User Name or password.

When I go into "Users and Passwords", the "anonymous" User Name is listed
on the "Users" tab as a member of the Administrators Group , but, the
"Add...," "Remove" and "Properties" buttons are greyed out.

The "Administrator" User Name is Highlighted in blue. But when I click on
the other User Names, nothing happens The blue highlight remains fixed on the
"Administrator" User Name.

I tried logging off "anonymous" and logging on as "Administrator" but, the
"Add...," "Remove" and "Properties" buttons are still greyed out.

This Win 2K installation has been a can of worms ever since I botched an
attempt to reinstall it years ago. I'd like to just replace it with XP, but I
don't think this old computer has the CPU speed or memory capacity to handle
running XP. And I'd hate to have to reformat and reinstall Win 2K at this
late stage in the game.

Any ideas on why the buttons are greyed out and how to get access to the Add
and Change USER settings, so that I can either change an existing User Name
or create a new one?

Put a tick in the box 'users must enter a username...'.
You can remove it later.

Thanks, GC! That did the trick.

Now if I could only figure out how to network this old computer running Win
2K with a hand-me-down laptop running XP I was given recently I would be a
happy camper. I've been trying, without success, for months to get these two
machines to talk to each other.

Can you suggest the best forum for me to post this problem in?
