I try to access WindowsUpdate and get:

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that
helps you get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system
in order to use Windows Update.

I have Windows 2000 SP4
5.00.2195

IE 6.00.2800.1106
Ciper Strength: 128 bit
Update Versions: SP1; Q828750; Q328970

I've looked at every single thing posted on the net and
the MSKB articles don't help either. Tried going to the
officeupdate site and it thinks I have a MAC version of
office and won't allow me to access hotmail because its
not a supported browser. This is happening to two of my
workstations and my Win2K3 server has no problems
accessing it. Running sygate personal firewall pro.
Tried disabling that and still doesn't work. ANY IDEAS???

Windows Update Fails:
Disable your firewall and anti-virus when obtaining the updates.

You shouldn't have been able to apply those updates in that order.
That last one was

<title>KB328970 - MS02-066: November, 2002, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer</title>

which would have been superseded by

<TITLE>828750 - MS03-040: October, 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer</TITLE>

So, which versions of all those affected modules do you actually have
installed?

Otherwise your symptom could indicate a problem with User-Agent.
Here's an excerpt from a previous reply about that. (Note: the actual
poster I was replying to had tried to paraphrase the error message;
so some of the wording may seem inappropriate as a direct reply
to your post.)

---

One possibility is that your User Agent string is either unusual
or being altered on the path to the remote application, e.g. by a firewall.

Check your User Agent string by entering the following in an
IE Address bar:
javascript:navigator.userAgent

(Note: that property name is case sensitive.)

Check what is being transmitted by using the following link:

Another possibility is that your scripting support is deficient in some
way; so poke around that site and see if any discrepancies pop up.

Since we don't know the exact text it may also be valid to suggest
that you use the Windows Update Troubleshooter
< http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...ndows%20Update >
and look at the item:
When using the Windows Update Web site you receive
the following message: Thank you ... Windows Update site
no longer offers updates for your computer

The same resolution is suggested for this problem:
When attempting to access the Windows Update Web site
you receive the following message: Thank You -- you must be running
a Microsoft windows operating system in order to use windows update

It's another registry hack. This time related to User Agent.
So if either of the above messages are the real one
those diagnostics I suggested will be significant clues.

Good luck
