I meant to uninstall IE7 but instead uninstalled SP2 in error. Then I
uninstalled IE7 with the intent of reinstalling SP2. But when I open a
browser window it is just white - no web pages are accessible.

So then I was going to do a system restore but I get the following error
message:

RSTRUI.EXE Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in SHLWAPI.dll

So now I can't do a restore or access the MS website to reinstall. Please
help me - it would be very much appreciated!!!!!

From another computer, download Windows XP Service Pack 2 package (complete) and burn it to CD/DVD media. You can download Windows XP Service Pack 2 from here:

Hi Ramesh,

I downloaded the package to CD and started installing it. But partway
through I got the following setup error:

Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the
cryptographic service is running on this computer.

Do you have any advice?

Thanks for your help,
Allison

Hi Allison,

1.Start the Administrative Tools utility in Control Panel.
2.Double-click Services.
3.Right-click Cryptographic Services, and then click Properties.
4.Click Automatic for Startup type, and then click Start.

If that does not help, check this KB out:

Hi Ramesh,

I wasn't able to get into "Services" - I received the following error message:

"MMC failed to initialize because it was installed incorrectly or because a
portion of the registry has become corrupted. Make sure the file
Mmcndmgr.dll is registered by running "regsvr32
%SystemRoot%\System32\mmcndmgr.dll"

So I started down the list of ideas on the link that you sent me. I did
most of them but received error messages on a few. I was also unable to
complete any steps requiring "Internet Options" because nothing in my browser
window is working. Anyway, I'm still getting the same error when I try to
install SP2.

Two other things I forgot to mention - one is that the computer is runnning
"Windows XP Tablet Edition". I'm not sure if that changes anything. The
other is that I have another identical notebook currently running SP2 and
IE6. Is there anything I can copy from the good PC? It seems like most of
the error messages are related to ".dll" files.

Also, I noticed that a log was created after downloading the SP2
installation files. Is there anything in the log that might be of use in
identifying the problem?

My brother has offered to reinstall the entire OS but that just seems
excessive since everything is working except the browser window. What are
your thoughts? Should I just take him up on it or do you have any other last
ditch ideas?

Thanks again and again,
Allison

Hi Allison,

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\System32\mmcndmgr.dll

You should be able to access Services MMC now.

Then follow the earlier instructions to see if the Cryptographic service is running.

I actually tried that right away and I got this error message:

LoadLibrary("C:\WINDOWS\System32\mmcndmgr.dll") failed - the specified
procedure could not be found.

Thanks.

It appears that the module mmcndmgr.dll is missing from the system. Try using the NET command-line tool to start the Cryptographic Service.

Click Start, Run and type:

cd /k net start cryptsvc

Press {ENTER}

I got the following messages:

The cryptographic service is starting.
The cryptographic services service could not be started.
A system error has occurred.
System error 127 has occurred.
The specified procedure could not be found.

On the link that you sent, can I download #1 to a cd then run the script on
the computer?

Yes, you may give that script a go. If nothing helps, you may have to do a repair installation using Windows XP CD with SP2 integration.

I got the following messages:

The cryptographic service is starting.
The cryptographic services service could not be started.
A system error has occurred.
System error 127 has occurred.
The specified procedure could not be found.

On the link that you sent, can I download #1 to a cd then run the script on
the computer?
