Can't access IMAP server through AOL ICS on Outlook XP

I recently signed up for AOL dial-up, since their offers looked more
appealing than any (non-cable company) one else's.
I was told on the phone when I signed up that Home networking was
supported by the dial up service and that I would need to speak to
someone in the online help section to get help accessing AOL through
my client PC.
Well, I set up the network myself, ennabled ICS on the AOL dial up
connection, and nothing worked. I searched through usenet looking for
help, many people suggested AnalogX Proxy, so I installed it, and the
HTTP worked, but e-mail didn't (pop3 or IMAP)

I am currently using CCProxy, but I still cannot access my IMAP e-mail
(and since that's the one given to me by the university, it's the most
important one)

Does anyone know of any free software that I can install that will
allow me to acces my IMAP e-mail through Outlook. The network is a
simple crossover connection between two ethernet cards.

Many Thanks
Norris

The simplest solution would be to dump AOL dialup and just get a regular
dialup ISP. AOL uses proprietary dialers and that is probably why the built
in Windows ICS does not work. If you were able to find a resonable priced
dialup ISP that uses the PPP dialer setup then you could easily create a
ICS. If loosing AOL is not an option then you can look at the freeware
version of Wingate proxy 5.0.x (it is free for personal use of 2 computers).
Wingates website is : http://www.deerfield.com/download/wingate/ and
their compatibility with AOL is described here:
http://www.deerfield.com/products/wi...lllist.htm#aol

Good luck.

Ok, I have Wingate installed, only... I have a few problems. I'm now getting
a message on my client PC saying that it can't find the Wingate Server,
which is the PC I am using to access this. Wingate is running and this PC is
able to access my client PC, only the client can't access this PC. I had to
change the registry entry
"HKLM\SYSTEM\Currentcontrollset\Services\SharedAccess\Start" from 2 to 3 to
remove ICS so Wingate would install. Could this be part of my problem? Any
ideas on how I can remedy this?

Thanks again

Norris

It has been over a year since I last used Wingate but I do not recall any of
those issues which you describe. Are you sure that your cross-over cable
network is working correctly? By that I mean do both machines have the same
Windows workgroup name? And can you share a folder on 1 PC and then see the
shared folder from the other PC using Windows Explorer or Network
Neighborhood for your workgroup? Once you are sure that the network is
acting correctly, then your Wingate should work.
