Can't access files on a burnt CD

I backed up a Hard Drive onto CD so I could get my files
onto another computer. I did a straight file to disk
transfer, and close it so it should be able to be read by
any computer. But any computer I bring it to, can read
the folders and files, but can not access them, or copy
them to another drive.

What does "can't" mean? Do you get an error? All the files on the CD will
be read-only.

Yes, I know they are read only, but I'm not trying to
change them
When I try to open a Word Document for example I get
The file name or path is not valid

When I try to copy and paste to the hard drive I get
Error performing inpage operation

The Word problem might be because it can't open a temporary copy on the CD.

Are you trying to do the copy and paste through explorer? For grins, have
you tried drag and drop?

As Danny said, Word and Excel both try to create a temp version of the file
in the same location that you open the file from. And for Access, an .ldb
file needs to be created in the location of the .mdb file. None of these
things can be done on a CD.

Yes I tried that
Think I found the problem
It states that it has 503Mb. saved on it. When I look on
the burnt side there is only about a quarter of an inch
from the centre burnt. Shouldn't there be a lot more with
503 mb? Did they only save the file information but not
the files themselves? Is that possible to do that?

That's possible indeed.
What programs do you use to create backup / burn the image (if you're using
an image file to do so, if you don't maybe you should consider doing so)?
Any read/write errors during burning?

Maybe you had a buffer underrun while burning and writing halted after
1/4...
