I bought a new DVD+-RW drive this week: LG GSA-4040B.
It worked fine until this morning.

Suddenly, when I click on the drive in Explorer, no matter what kind
of disk is in the drive, I get "Please insert disk in drive e:"

I have been working on this problem ALL DAY, and have Googled
everything I can find.

I'm using XP Home.

1. The drive shows up in the BIOS, and it shows up in Device Manager
with no conflicts or errors.

2. I have done the registry edit (Upperfilters and Lowerfilters ).

3. I have booted into Safe Mode, uninstalled the drive in Device
Manager, rebooted, re-detected.

4. I did a system restore to yesterday, when I know for sure it
worked. I even restored to a point two days ago, when I successfully
tested the burning functions.

5. There is some kind of virtual drive on f: " VOBID InstandDrive CD
SCIS CDrom Device." What is this?

I don't know what else to do...I'm at my wit's end, especially since
it seems to have stopped working for no reason at all !

Please help!

Try deleting the drive under device manager, shutting down cold and then
reboot. Let's see if the computer "rediscovers" the missing drive. My 2
cents worth.

I did this. When I reboot, it detects the drive (with the correct
model number) and installs it. But it still can't be accessed.

Hmmmmmmm, not good. How long have you had this version of the operating
system installed because it sounds like you are headed for a reinstall.
