can't accept cookies

my computer has stopped accepting cookies which prevents me from logging onto various sites such as internet banking.

i'v ticked "always allow session cookies" in advanced/ privacy/ internet options but with no effect. i've also tried disabling my firewall.

Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2

connected to internet using virgin cable

what am i doing wrong?
