Canoscan FS4000 US

I have been using this film scanner for several months now with no
probs whatsoever. I gave a friend a loan of the scanner and the first
scan I tried when I got it back showed up loads of dust on the photo.
The dust is not on the negative so I figure it must be inside the
actual film scanner. Switching on dust removal works but I don't want
to have to do this foerver more as it slows down the whole procedure.
Has anyone had similar problems, and has anyone managed to
successfully clean the actual scanner internally? I can't find any
literature on this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

there is no glass carriers, so would not dust inside show as lines? My
FS4000 is still clean, because I made a dust cover for when it is not in
use, so I'm just guessing.

I'm not sure how internal dirt can cause dust spots on the images. The
scanner samples one vertical line at a time, then stitches the ~5000
lines into a single image. If dirt is present on the optics, I'd think
it would cause dark or blurred streaks running the length of the scan.

Opening the APS door allows reasonable access to the optics. Give both
lens sets a good blast of canned air. (Be #$%#$ sure that you don't
hold the can sideways and spooge freezing liquid all over the place.)
Beyond that, I don't see what else there is to clean.
