I purchased the CanoScan 8400F and I'm very happy with it but I'm wondering
if other users of this scanner can share some words of wisdom on appropriate
settings for 35mm negatives and 4"x6" photos ..?
I originally bought the scanner to scan negatives and relatively few slides
but I'm finding negative scanning a little too slow at about 2 minutes per
negative. I find placing up to 3 photos on the scanner and scanning as
Platen multi-crop to be much faster.
I would REALLY like to know what other people are doing but here are the
results of some of my own 'experiments':
All output images are taken from the same picture (negative or photo), JPEG
with a resulting resolution of 600dpi
- Negative: IrfanView, Advance mode, scan took 127 seconds and image
typically appears off-color, 6.1 MB
- Photo: IrfanView, Advance mode, scan took 28 seconds and image
typically appears with correct tone & color, 6.1 MB
- Photo: IrfanView, Multi-crop mode, scan took 40 seconds and image
typically appears with correct tone & color, 6.1 MB
- Photo: Cano Toolbox, Multi-scan mode, scan took 40 seconds and image
typically appears with correct tone & color, 1.1 MB
I cannot see any difference in the output on my screen or printed at 8"x10".
I thought I would use the negative scanning feature but I'm finding it very
slow and color correction to be problematic. Scratch/dust removal takes
longer.
The platen multi-scan feature works well and the cropping nearly always
work - I can scan 6+ photos in the time I can scan one negative.
- Are there benefits to using the negative scan feature over photos that I'm
not considering?
- Any easy post-processing to auto-correct the tone/color from the negative
scans?
- Does anyone know if the CanoScan ToolBox can be forced to auto-calibrate
on each scan?
- Can anyone else share what is working well for them? or good links for
8400F scanner settings.
Will also be interested in slide settings - I have a few boxes of slides but
I haven't got to these yet.
