My Canoscan 3000F is malfunctioning. In scanning a document this morning,
the "Preview" function worked o.k., but on the final scan the scan head
started operating in fits and starts about a third of the way down a
page--repeately stopping momentarily, backing up 1/2 inch or so, then going
forward 1/2 or so. Cancelled the scan and repeated with the same results a
couple of times.

By switching to "copy" function rather than "save file" function on the
scanner input dialog box, I had similar results but eventually got a page
copied by walking away for 10 minutes or so. Attempting to copy a second
page resulted in the scan head stopping about 1/4 way down the page.

I recall reading a post a few years ago about another scanner that something
of this nature would happen when the positioning belt/encoder somehow
slipped with respect to its reference.

Any thoughts on possible causes and how to fix?

Hey there Leonard ! Well, I don't know if there is anything
wrong with your scanner, but what seems to be happening is something
that happens with my scanner. If I scan a picture that is fairly
large, the scanning head will stop, reverse itself, then do a little
more of the scan, then repeat the same process. It will eventually do
the entire scan.
When this happens, there is nothing wrong with the scanner, it's
just feeding more info to the computer than the computer can digest,
so it stops, waits for the computer to catch up, then continues with
it's scan.
This seems to be caused by a lack of resources, most likely
memory. Check to make sure that your memory is okay. If it is, then
check to make sure that nothing is running in the background, like
spyware, viruses, etc.
I've never had a scanner failure of any sort, so I don't know
what happens if a scanner starts to fail. If you try all of the
things I've mentioned and you still have problems, then it may be time
to get a new scanner, but stopping and starting is normal for a
scanner that's trying to scan a large picture, or you have a large dpi
setup.
