I have a problem with a Canon S520 printer on a Win 2000 SP 4 system
that sees only intermittent usage. After at least 2 months of
inactivity (needed new cartridges) , the printer seems unable to
accept print jobs, and also screws up my USB mouse. The only way to
fix the mouse is to unplug the printer's USB cable. What gives?

The gory details, so that I hope I' ve provided enough information for
someone to figure this out. The Canon web site is useless, of course:

The USB mouse (IBM) works fine Printer is installed as a USB device,
and fully recognized by Windows as OK.

I power up the printer , the printer makes an unfamiliar noise, and
then the indicator light alternatively green and orange. Mouse is
still OK.

I open up the Windows printer icon for this printer.

I activate the control panel, and select the Maintenance tab.
Maintenance panel opens up. Mouse is still OK.

I click on Nozzle Check (or any other button that sends a "job" to the
printer. Now the mouse seems almost paralyzed. It moves only a small
amount left-right or up-down and seems to stutter.

At the same time, the Windows printer icon window shows an "error" in
printing.

Finally, another windows opens up with the message that the printer is
not responding to "printer status," followed by a Windows Printers
Folder window saying that there was an error in printing, with a
Retry|Cancel choice.

I cancel the Windows warning. (by selecting the window with Alt-Tab
and then exiting with Alt-F4. Mouse still doesn't work.

I close down all the other windows associated with the printer. Mouse
still doesn't work.

Finally, I disconnected the printer's USB cable. Now the mouse works
fine. Seems as happy as a real mouse in a big pile of cheese.

What now? I seriously doubt that the printer has a mechanical
problem, since I bought this printer about 18-24 months old and has
had very light usage.

Have you tried using the printer without having the mouse plugged in?

Does the printer work on another PC?
