Sounds like a sensor or micro switch which is stuck causing the false error.
As to not getting new ink or printhead with the replacement unit, I don't
see that as a problem. Use the same items in the replacement unit. It's no
different than just getting a replacement part. The same practice applies to
laser printers. When a replacement printer is shipped under warranty, it
comes without a toner cartridge since the existing one is usable with the
new printer.
