I have been using my canon mp160 with refilled printer cartidges for several
years. Now however the printer displays an E 5 error when I turn it on and
will not function at all. Any thoughts?

I Googled for E5 errors on the printer and it shows a bad or
improperly installed cart.
Commenter said those carts are only good for 5-6 refills. How many
times have you refilled? Maybe you are there.
Always best to have a bunch of replacement supplies on hand to test
and react to these situations.

I find I can get a few refills out of my PG40 & CL50 cartridges, but after 3
or 4 refills you have to get replacements.

Out of interest, how do you refill them? Through holes bored in the top, or
do you remove the entire top-plate? I did the latter last time, and got
much better reuse.

I bored holes in the top following instructions from a TnB refill kit.
Did you buy Canon cartidges or did you get the cheaper third
party cartidges (inkco , inc club ect)?

It sounds like you are talking about refilling the original ink catridge
which often only good for around 3-4 refills. *BUT* if you read and use the
refillable catridge which is not only dirt cheap but you can refill as many
as you wish.

So, GOOGLE for the refillable ink catridge and go from there.

If there is third party ink catridge then there should be a spcial
refillable ink catridge which you do not need to drill no hole. And you
should learn to use Vacuuming filling style.
