Running w2k and trying to use my Canon LIDE20 scanner, which used to
work just fine. Now it seems not to exist in the list of scanners in
Control Panel->Scanners&Cameras box. In device manager there is no
"Other Devices" folder.

This used to work just fine. The canon website is useless-it suggests
plugging in the AC adapter. Which would be fine if the scanner had an
adapter socket!

Since it is powered from the USB port, is it getting power? Did the USB
port die? Did you move the scanner to a USB hub? Is the USB port still
in the Device Manager? Does the scanner appear in Device Manager if you
turn on Show Hidden under View? If so whats the error mesage then?

I tested for the above by using the same port for running a printer
and then the adsl modem. So the port /cable part seems fine.
