Canon Lide 50 Problem

Hi

I recently purchased a Canon Lide 50 but can't get it to work. I keep
getting the message 'Unable to open twain source - Please check connection'
I have tried to reinstall the drivers goodness knows how many times plus
I've just completed a complete repair of xp (I now have about 3 hours of
updates to download :/ ) but the problem remains the same.

If I check the scanner 'properties' via the control panel everything reports
ok and I can even test it and it whirs away before giving me the message
'test successful' ! so I can't work out the problem :S Driving me nuts this
is!

I was reading around and somebody mentions changing to ecp in BIOS on
parallel port. Mine was spp but after trying all possible combinations the
problem still remains. I haven't got a clue what this means btw :/

No software I have can see the scanner. Photoshop for example would have the
scanner option on the import list iirc but there's nothing there.
I don't get it :/

I am using the scanner which is usb 2 on an older 1.1 but I got the message
that things will work only slower...

I have also removed all usb devices... printer etc.... except an
intellimouse. I have 2 usb ports.... one holds the mouse and the other the
scanner.

Can anyone throw any ideas my way before I explode?

Thankyou!

If you can, use a PS2 mouse instead of USB.

Look in Device Manager for the Universal Serial Bus Controllers, see if they
are working.

Have you gone to Windows Update?
Usb does not work correctly with Windows XP until you update to SP1.

With XP only install the motherboard "4 in 1" drivers. Do not install the
Motherboard USB (2.0) Drivers, Go to Windows Update with the USB (2.0) ports
turned on in BIOS and update to SP1.

Another thing, you can get PCI USB 2.0 cards for around $15. Walmart sells
them!

Try using another (known to be good) USB cable. I recently bought a Lide 20
that came with a bad USB cable.
