Looking for an inexpensive USB 2.0 scanner. Need basics. Maybe an
occational FAX or phto scan. Is this a good choice?

I got the LiDE 80 because I needed its slide abilities, but it's certainly
very fast and does nice scans so I'm guessing it's more or less the LiDE50
but with the extra slide stuff. A vast improvement on my N1220U.

I've had the lide 50 for about six months. No complaints. Nice not to have
to plug it in (usb powered).
