After looking at many various ink refill vendors, some offer a couple
different types of ink for the Canon i850. They offer both a regular
color ink and then offer a photocolor ink. Similarly, they offer a
black ink and then they offer a pigmented black ink.

I was hoping the selection of refill ink was going to be simple. Is
there some special distinction in the ink for this i850. Any advice
would be appreciated.

You need to look at some of the other vendors out there. The i850 uses BCI-3
cartridges and doesn't use photocolor ink.
http://www.weink.com/ecart/refillkits/canonmpf80.htm has a clear listing of
the ink needed for this model.
