Hello All,

I have a canon i850, it comes up with service error 5100, can anyone
let me know what this is.

I have reset the waste ink tank counter,
Reset the Eprom,

Checked the printer paper path, the carriage , and cant find anything
out of postion. I think my son dropped it but he denies it.

The canon I450 service manual tells me that error 5100 is carriage
related, replace purge unit or logic board.

Any suggestions will be gratefully accepted.

Martin

I see you have received an non sequitur from our resident troll, I'm sure you
know how to handle that!
Back to your problem.
The 5100 error in the i850 is carriage related, specifically it points to the
code strip, carriage assembly or logic board.
If it is the logic board or carriage assembly then it is probably time to
replace the printer unfortunately.
However, the code strip (if that is the problem) is another matter -
It is the plastic strip that runs across the printer and through the head
carriage, it is supported at each end (one end under spring tension).
If it has become dislodged it will give this error, also if it has any ink,
grease or other foreign matter on it, it will give errors.
You can clean it with a cloth dampened with water but you need to exercise
great care to avoid pulling it off its anchors.
The other thing to do is clean the stainless steel bar that the carriage slides
on and lubricate it with a cloth moistened with 3-in-1 or light machine oil.
If neither of these works then I guess it is repair shop or replacement time.
Good luck.
Tony
