This model is held together with very tacky glue strips that secure the
left and right edge guides. To remove the edge guides, use a DULL blade
like a table knife or butter knife. Lift the front end of the left edge
guide and slip the blade between the glass platen and the plastic edge
guide. Slowly and deliberately work your way toward the back of the
unit. The glue will release as you go, and when you get to the rear the
plastic strip will pop loose. Repeat on the right side.
now we will remove the glass platen. Note: there are two small coil
springs and two very small anti-friction pads that are part of the scan
head assembly. Any or all of these parts can come become airborne when
the glass is removed. Be alert for them! The two coil springs are about
5mm in diameter and 5mm tall and are of bright metal, the little
anti-friction pads are less than 3mm in diameter and maybe 4 mm long
black plastic. They look like plastic rivets.
With the edge guides removed you will be able to make the glass platen
move back and forth to the front and rear. Move the glass as far t the
front as possible. Using a pair of table knives at each of the rear
corners of the glass, gently lift the glass up until it just clears the
edge of the frame. Now you can "walk" the glass to the rear, raising it
as you make progress. At this point th top cover is still in place, so
it takes a little patience and care, but you can get the glass out. Once
the glass is out, you will see the black and white calibration bars that
are part of the front edge of the glass and glued in place.
At this point you have probably had one or both of the springs fly out
of the assembly, and one or both of the little anti-friction pads may
have fallen from their place.
If you are planning to clean, lube and rebuild the scanner, the steps
are probably self-evident. I have only taken my old faithful scanner
apart so far, so at this point I leave you.
