I just purchased a canon digital camera and will need a new printer
"primarily" for photos.
Should I go with the I860 or the I470d.
The purchase price is meaningless to me. The factors I'm considering are
Image/print quality and the cost of ink.

Just one point. The i860 has a PictBridge capability which will be lost
on your camera unless it also has a similar capability or can be
upgraded accordingly.

Go with the Canon i960 if you don't care how much the purchase price is. It
too has individual ink cartridges, but will have much better print quality.
The intial price is $50-100 more than the i860 IIRC.

If your primary factor is quality then you should consider the i960 as it's
a full 6-color photo printer.

From a demo at best Buys, I don`t think the black text is as black as
from the 860, if that is of any concern.

The BK-24 series color cartridges (used in the i470) have three ink colors
in one cartridge. The amout of ink is much smaller (less than one half) than
in the BCI-6 series cartridges.

For best operating economy, use the i560/i860/i960 printers.

I'd say i560. Separate tanks gives lower price towards i470.

Why only Canon?
Are you concerned about longevity, also?
How about roll paper?
How about long panoramas?
Lowest ink cost will be with a CFS---these are more available for
Epson.

Go with the i950 or i960. For the few dollars more, it is well worth it.
