I'm a home user who won't print photos daily and I just bought an i850
but wonder if its worth the extra $100 to return it for the i950? I'm
guessing maybe 33% of use will be for photos.

In your opinion, can you see a substantial difference in the
appearance / resolution for 4"x6" printed photos? Same question for
say 8"x10" size ?

I have the i850. I've compared a scanned 35 mm slide, printed 8 x 10
by Ofoto, to an 8 x 10 printed on the i850, and I really can't tell
the difference (except the colors are slightly better from the i850).
For me, that's "good enough". Even if the i950 is "better", I really
don't care.

I have an i950 and wouldn't trade it for anything, but in your case I think
you would be very happy with the i850. I don't think you will notice much
difference at 4 x 6. 8 x 10 could be another story. It depends how
critical you are.

"Substantial"?

The difference is going to be subtle improvements in color rendering
especially of flesh-tones and greens, as I understand it. I gather
these are mostly professional-level concerns, but it's a minor miracle
that a consumer can even get into the game for another $100.

Heck, you've got the i850 home already, run it for a year and then
reconsider. Maybe something better will come along meanwhile. My
$0.02.

J.
