I am using a new Canon 8400F, scanning an 8.5" x 11" page at 400 dpi,
color. The page is black print on white, with a yellow Post-It note
attached. If I scan into Adobe Photoshop Elements, with default
settings, I get a black-on-green image. If I scan into IrfanView
(without changing the gamma or other settings in the Canon ScanGear CS
software), I get a black-on-white image. Either way, I get little or
no yellow from the Post-It. What am I missing?

Go into Advanced Mode where you can adjust the parameters.
Turn Auto Tone on.

Here is a scan I made with my Canon 8400F and Irfanview 3.98.
Nothing special, I just have the Auto Tone on.

This scan is 100 DPI of an 8.5 x11 inch sheet of paper with a yellow post-it
note on top.

Please excuse the JPEG artifacts in the Text. I compressed for the web
pretty heavy.

If needed, you can adjust the black and white points to get a full range of
density.
You can also adjust the individual color channels to increase the yellow.

Very nice. Yeah, that would be great. But my Auto Tone is greyed out.
I don't seem to have the option of turning it on. I played around
with Preferences and other settings, hoping that one of them would
remove the greying, but no joy.

I believe that is an indication of a bad software installation.

You should reinstall the Canon CanoScan driver. Remove it first.

To remove the Canon CanoScan Twain driver:
Turn on your scanner. (It must be active to show in device manager)
Right-Click My Computer>Properties. Hardware Tab, Click the Device Manager
Button. There is a branch called Imaging devices, click the (+) plus sign,
Right-Click the CanoScan 8400F, Uninstall. Disconnect the USB cable from the
scanner. Reboot the computer.

Put in your CanoScan Setup CD-ROM. If it does not Auto Start, Start>Run,
Browse to your CD drive, click Setup.exe. Click Open Button, Click OK.

Follow all prompts. If you get a screen warning that your driver is not
signed, click "Continue Anyway".

Reboot.

Now you can plug-in the scanner to USB and let Windows XP finish the driver
install.

Sorry Carl! I don't think that's it. The Auto Tone is not activ
unless you have previewed image displayed in the ScanGear driver.
Without previewing, the option is not active. However, it is mos
likely that you already have the driver set to automatically perfor
the Auto Tone as noted in the Preferences - Color Settings tab

For whatever reason, before you preview, the Auto Tone (thoug
grayed-out) indicates off. But after you preview, the Auto Ton
option activates and indicates that it's on

Right! And for some reason, although I think I already did have Auto
Tone selected (as you say), now I get great scans in both IrfanView and
Elements. Thanks!

You are so correct PCLIVE.

I should not assume.

It is just automatic for me to click the preview button anytime I start to
scan.

Nothing much happens in the CanoScan driver until a preview has been done.
