Am i right in thinking there are never going to be generic carts for his
printer?.

There were no 4000 models left so i had to get the newer 4200. I wish i
had never bought it, its costing a fortune.

(mease - i dont want your opinion thx)

Andy - there are currently some reliable vendors with bulk refill inks that
they claim are formulated for the 4200. Until compatable carts become
available, you can refill. Quite easy to do and even cheaper than
compatable carts. You will get a series of messages when the printer reads
the chip as being empty, even though you have refilled the cart. You can
still print OK. There may be an issue with the warranty on the printer as
the printer "thinks" that you have run the cart dry and are continuing to
print - a sure way to risk burning out a Canon printhead. In the meanwhile,
if you decide not to refill, there is probably a market for empty chipped
carts for the new Canon printers.. Anyone who decides to refill these carts
will need backup carts and replacements when the ones they are refilling
stop functioning properly.

Don't confuse compatable with generic. Compatable products are formulated
specifically for a printer or series of printers that use the same ink and
generic inks claim to be suitable for use in several brands of printers.
Generic inks are generally to be avoided. AND - you already know to
disregard the troll's comments on this issue. Smart man.

Should you wish to read up on actual experences see this thread on
steve's forums.
http://www.stevesforums.com/forums/v...58&forum_id=40

But the short is the only option presently for the ip4200 is manual
refilling. Chip removal and placement on a compatable cartridge may be
an option but not with bci-6 tanks. You may wish to consult your local
area Cartridge World or Island Inkjets for fill as you wait solutions,
or ask the people at a place called "lasermonks" if they plan to refill
old pgi/cli chipped tank.

More data to follow with further experences.

I can advise that the chip issue is being worked on by at least two world wide
vendors. One of them has reported that the problem they face is the physical
size of the compatible chip. I understand they have designed a non patent
infringing chip but the cost of getting it manufactured small enough is
challenging. Whether this will be completed for this series of printers I do
not know but I am sure there will be a fanfare if and when it is.

I wouldn't say never, but you can refill the PGI5 and CLI8 carts, at the
expense of ink monitoring.
