I was gettting the same problem so I contacted my ISP.
They told me that there was a Trojan Horse virus going
around and to purchase a virus scanner. I did find a
virus on my computer. I had the program remove it, but I
still can't use the search engines. You might try that to
see if it solves the problem on your computer. I'm
running 2000 PRO and IE6. I am still investigating the
problem and if and when I find a solution I will post it
immediately.
