Just a few things I would try....
Remove the second modem and re-insert the 1st one (that you had problems with).
Go to add/Remove Programs and un-install any associated software.
Go to Device Manager, Un-install the modem driver if it's shown.
If you don't see it, go to the View menu and select to show all hidden device drivers.
If you see it, un-install it.
Empty the Recycle Bin.
If your using Norton System Works, empty the protected files from the Recycle Bin too.
Shut down the computer (power off for a minute or so).
Power back up and boot as you normally would.
Go back to Device Manager to see if anything shows up under Modems.
If so, delete (un-install) them. (View All hidden devices again)
Power off the computer again.
Install the second modem (the one you want to use).
Power up the computer, XP should now see your new modem and install a generic driver for
it.
If not.
Go back to Device Manager, if no modem is shown,
Right-click on the top most entry where the (installed) devices are listed. (this will
likely be the name of your computer).
Select to scan for hardware changes.
Hopefully it will now show up.
If it does show up, now you can install the software that came with the fax-modem.
What does the documentation that came with your modem say about the correct order of
installation.
Sometimes hardware manufacturers want you to install the software first.
After all this, If XP still does not detect/install the modem, you might have another bad
modem.
This time of year, static electricity is at it's worst.
Never touch anything electronic on the modem card, one quick discharge of static
electricity from your fingers can kill a modem. (If your standing on carpet, wear rubber
sole shoes and loose the wool socks).
Touch the computer case with one hand (computer turned off and un-plugged) before sticking
your hand inside and before you touch (pick-up) the modem. While your fitting the modem in
the PCI slot, keep touching the computer case every moment or so just to be safe. And
also, keep your feet still on the floor, moving feet and rubbing against things is what
causes static buildup to begin with.
Sorry for the lecture. But some years ago, I killed my bosses motherboard because I didn't
know better.
Alittle lengthily, but this is probably what I would do.
