If I delete an email while in the columns view, I can undo the delete.

If I click on the X button while reading an email, the email is deleted and
there is no undo. Although in theory I can recover it from the deleted
folder, sometimes I don't know which email I deleted (by accident) and
having to read through the thousands email in the deleted folder takes some
time.

Is this a bug, or is it by design?

It sounds to me like you have some kind of filter set on the view you're
using on that folder (the Inbox, I presume, but it doesn't really
matter)...probably one that hides read messages. Try switching back to
Messages view and see if that helps.
