I cannot enter any text in an address bar or type any
text into website pages. Further i cannot close any
browser windows (do no even get an error message or
repetitive 'end task' messages - just no response at all)

Have run both virus and spyware scans but this did not
fix the problem.

There was a similar problem with IE5 (see KB Q235236) but
i dont know if this fix applies to IE6?

Any ideas?

Have you run CWShredder? A coolwebsearch variant, CWS Datanotary, can cause
this. Download CWShredder from:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html
or
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
Take a look at Internet Options> Accessibility> User style sheet. If style
sheet is checked and you didn't do it, it's datanotary.

Other malware might be causing this. Follow CWShredder with Ad-aware, if you
haven't already run Ad-aware. http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
