A strange problem is happening on my windows XP pc. I want to see the
hidden files and folders. So, I do the usual ritual of going to Folder
Options, and selecting the "Show hidden files and folders" in the
radio button and Press apply. Then I close the options pop-up.

But I can't see the folders. So, I recheck the radio button in Folder
Options and find that it is still stuck at "Do not show ... " option.
So, does it mean it gets reset as soon as I press OK.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

Regards,
-Madhur

PS: I have just cleaned-up my box froom Rajump and RavMon worms

Make sure you are logged on in an account with administrator privileges.

Open the Registry Editor (Start>Run>regedit).

Navigate to, and select, this registry key in the left pane:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL

Delete the value named CheckedValue in the right-pane.
To do this, right-click CheckedValue in the right pane, and click Delete on the menu
that appears.

Now create a new DWORD value called CheckedValue.
To do this, right-click in a blank area of the right pane, select New> DWORD Value,
name it CheckedValue, and press Enter.

Set the value data to 1 (0x00000001).
To do this, right-click the CheckedValue entry you just created, click Modify, leave
it set to Hexadecimal, type 1 in the Value Data box, and click OK.

Do not do *anything* else in the Registry Editor, just close it when done.

Post back with the results.

Hi Glen,

It worked and a restart did not screw it up again. But now I am not
able to figure out the reason behind this problem. Earlier I felt its
because of Brontok virus and I happened to download a Sophos removal
tool.

Surprisingly Norton deleted the tool itself saying its a Brontok
Virus. What could be the reason behind this corrupted registry?

The original problem of not being able to turn off the setting was most likely the
result of action by the virus.

Make sure your system is now clean.
