Cannot stop constant disk activity

My XP system gives constant disk activity for perhaps 30 minutes each time
it starts up. I have not been able to figure out the cause.
I have "office alternate user" and ctfmon disabled.
I have no scheduled activities.
The longest period of activity seems to follow a defrag.

Can you help?

Peter

Hi Peter

Have you got the Indexing Service running?

Thanks Will.

I forgot to mention the indexing service. I do not have it running.

Hi

Have you had a look in msconfig>startup to see if there are any entries that
may point to the problem. Have you had a look in Task Manager for any
apps/processes that perhaps shouldn't running? 30 mins would perhaps
suggest an app. like Defrag is running.

Perhaps it is the Indexing service. Go to Services (Administrative Tools
applet in Control Panel) and turn it off. See if that helps.

Then I just don't know since I can't see your computer. My psychic
powers haven't worked right since the last Service Pack ;-). Seriously,
though, what about 1) running Task Manager and making note of all
programs/processes running; 2) Perhaps one of the Systernals free
utilities might help:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/utilities.shtml.

If you find out, do post it because I'm curious. Sorry I wasn't able to
give you better help.

Good luck,

Malke
