cannot start outlook - scanpst aborts

Everything was fine with outlook until I decided to move my pst files
in an external hard disk drive-NTFS (in order to have the same pst at
home and office). A few days later Outlook couldn't start:

Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window.
The set of folders cannot be opened. Errors have been detected in the
file []. Quit Outlook and all mail-enabled applications, and then use
the Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in
the file. For more information about the Inbox repair tool, see Help.

So I tried to run scanpst but I got the error:
An error has occurred that caused the scan to be stopped. No changes
have been made to the scanned file

Although I used a very recent backup and started again to use Outlook,
in a few days I got the same errors!

My mailbox consists of 5 pst files. No one of them exceeds 700MB.
Scanpst aborts when I try to apply it on the core pst file (621MB). I
am using Microsoft Office 2007 SP1.

I have read several solutions (restart in safe mode and run scanpst,
quit antivirus app and google desktop) but nothing seems to apply in
my case.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Makis

Create a new pst-file and copy the contents of your current pst-file to the
new one (use drag&drop and not import). Apparently you've got a corruption
in your pst-file which cannot be fixed by scanpst.exe.

while its possible to put psts on a usb drive, if the drive is removed
before outlook is closed you can end up with corruption in the pst. For this
reason, its not recommended for regular use.

If you move the files back to your hard drive do you get the same errors?

Thank you for your answers!

Robert, I created a new pst but I cannot open the "corrupted" pst in
order to drag&drop its content. If I drag&drop the whole file from the
file system into the new pst I just get a new email containing this
pst! Do you mean to use the backup pst file?

Diane, I got the same errors when I copied the pst files into the hard
drive.

Thanks,
Makis

Don't drag the PST into Outlook. Drag it from the USB drive to a hard drive
folder and then in Outlook use File>Open>Outlook Data File to try to open
it.
