Before you grumble in exasperation, I have searched quite a bit on this error
message. This is what I have done so far: 1) tried to open outlook.exe
/safe -- won't open. 2) tried to reset navpane - no help 3) renamed
extend.dat and outcmd.dat files - no help. 4) unable to run scanpst.exe 5)
Tried to change (repair) in add/remove... says files corrupt, must re-intall.

This maybe so, maybe not... before I re-install, does anyone have some
input? I am afraid I will lose my extensive orgainization of emails in many
specialized folders if I re-install. The amount of work filing over a
thousand emails is a daunting task! It appears to me that PST only keeps the
messages, not the orgainization of them, not to mention the calendar items
and tasks.

My version: Office 12.0.6425.1000 (Enterprise 2007)/ Outlook 12.0.6504.5000

My event data: SessionLauncher service fails - cannot find path. Event ID
7000

I've run out of both airspeed and altitude... need help or a parachute.
Thanks.

If your PST file is intact, you will not lose anything. But be sure to
make a backup before you start the repair install; just copy the PST
file to a safe location - while Outlook is closed, of course.

One thing: what do you mean by "unable to run scanpst.exe"?

The pst's store *all* data and their structure, you can even backup this
data by the simple expedient of copying the pst file(s) to some other
location in explorer (whilst Outlook is closed / not a running process)
After all if you are not allready backing up data what do you think will
happen to it when your hd fails?

So you pop your Office cd/dvd in, and after a few secs, the resulting window
gives an option to run Office Diagnostics, but this fails, with what exact
msg?
If the msg referes generally to corrrupt files I would look in Control
Panel> Adminastrative Tools > Event Viewer to see if a whole batch of err's
are logged
I would aslo run the utility provided by your HD maker to test the hd, from
a bootable floppy/cd

I had a HDD crash recently, and had to restore all my .pst files. All emails
were recovered, but not in the organized folders. I had to sort through all
1000+ of them and it took me a week. I know how to save the .pst file to
another location, but for some reason, my personal folders are not kept in
customized state. Are you telling me that they are for you?
I tried to run the scanpst.exe from Start/Run... it just gives me the same
error: Cannot start outlook, etc., etc.....

As I told Pat, I know how to re-direct the .pst file to another location. It
is just that the personal folders are not kept in customized format. All my
emails are preserved, but I have to sort through them and move them to the
proper folder.

Yes, I have a backup, but if the operating file is corrupted, I would just
restore a corrupted file and be back at square one.

I ran the Office diagnostics and got no error. At the end of the
diagnostics, it attempts to connect to the Microsoft server for additional
help, but will not connect. Please note that I have a good connection to all
other internet web sites. For some reason, the URL that it is looking for
will not work.

As far as error messages is concerned, I have about a half dozen of these
same errors over the past 2 months, but only one every 100 or so normal
events. I was using Outlook throughout the day, and only had this problem
out of the blue when I attempted to check my email before dinner. This
catastrophic error has occurred only a time or two, but after restarting my
system, it booted up OK. This time it did not. I will do a chkdsk....

Then whatever method you used to backup / redirect was faulty. A copy of a
data file contains all data and its structure. So opening that copy within
OL will result in a mirror image of what was originally in place.
Allthough I'm assuming a pop mail account
The HD manufacturers utility is more comprehensive than chkdsk, & is
designed specifically for your HD

Well, I made a copy of my .pst file on another HDD and held my breath while
re-installing Office. Before I did, I took a quick glance at the updates in
Add/Remove. After installing from the CD on top of the existing install, I
did a quick check, and Outlook seems to run good. I then updated the new
install on the Update site, and it re-installed SP2 and all hot fixes,
apparently on top of the ones already on my system. I did note one
particular file that caught my attention: KB967642... to fix an error with
SP installs...! Could it be?

Anyway, the original install was from an online download. Good thing I
asked for the hard copy CD. Installing from the CD may be the fix... who
knows?

If your .pst file were broken,You can try a popular Outlook recovery
tool called Advanced Outlook Repair to repair your PST file. It is a
powerful tool to recover messages, folders and other objects from
corrupt or damaged Microsoft Outlook PST files.

Detailed information about Advanced Outlook Repair can be found at
http://www.datanumen.com/aor/

And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe
Good luck!
