No download, manual process...
Add System Environment Variable
1.) System Properties (Control Panel, System Applet or
Right Click Computer, Left Click Properties.
2.) Advanced System Settings, Advanced (TAB)
3.) Environment Variables [Button]
4.) Use System Variables ( bottom half of window )
5.) New
-name it
DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
-set it's value =
1
Device Manager ( Control Panel, Classic View )
1.) Click View
2.) Tic/Check option "Show Hidden Devices"
3.) Expand Category "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"
Scan list for entries shown in diminished tone or grayed out.
*There is a difference between Phantom entries and those that
aren't currently plugged in or powered on. Both types are
shown grayed out so you have to be careful what you remove.
4.) Look for entries with "Controller" or "Hub" that are shown in
diminished tone. If any are shown Right Click each and from
the context menu Left Click "Uninstall"
5.) Reboot
6.) Phantom Entries may also appear in other categories DO NOT
remove Phantoms from Sound or System Devices.
7.) While in Device Manager also check for the presence of a category
"Other Devices". If found, this indicates Vista has detected devices
but was unable to identify or load drivers for them.
