Cannot shutdown after resume

If I resume from standby or hibernate, and then attempt to
shut down my computer, everything hangs. The system
freezes on the "Preparing to shutdown" message, and even
the mouse freezes.

I can startup and shutdown all day long, but as soon as I
go into standby or hibernate and come back out of it --
shutdown hangs.

Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running WinXP SP1, ASUS A7V mainboard, 512MB RAM,
Althon 1.2Ghz processor.
