Cannot shut OL down

I have been having a lot of trouble going from one OL 2003 profile to
another. One is personal and one is for business. Of course I realize that
I cannot simply switch between the two but have to close OL and restart it.
That worked for a while. Then I found that when I restarted OL I was not
offered the choice of profiles; instead OL opened in the last profile I had
used. I found a workaround by going to the Task Manager, finding the
Outlook.exe "Image" (an odd name) and manually ending the process. That was
pretty simple and it worked for a while. Now that workaround no longer
works. When I restart OL--after ending the process in Task Manager--it
resumes with the last-used profile and usually tells me that OL was
improperly shut down and that it needs to check the OL files. The only way
at present to shift to an alternate OL profile is to reboot the
computer--which is a big time annoyance and takes a lot of time.

What the %^&* is wrong? I have considered abandoning the use of profiles
but for obvious reasons I still need to keep private stuff separate from the
professional. My attempts as using rules to divert incoming mail to
separate folders based on which of my e-mail addresses the sender used have
been a total failure. I hear that the current version of OL allows easy
switching between profiles. I am using Win XP Pro (SP3). Can I use the
current version of OL while running Office 2003? Hint: I wold rather not
have to ditch my familiarity with Word 2003 to learn something new.

I saw a SlipStick paper on this problem listing a bunch of programs that may
keep OL from shutting down properly. The only one I have is Blackberry
software. I had set the BB Desktop Manager (needed for synching) to start
manually so it should not be running unless I start it myself. I see no
evidence that it is running anyway in Task Manager, but then again most of
the Process/Image names are undecipherable. Another possible problem is
ActiveSync but as far as I can tell I do not have that software. I also
went into OL Add-on Manager and removed some sort of iTunes calendar
thingamabob (Why there should be a connection between OL and my iPod beats
me!) and also something for OL backup--in my personal profile. But these
steps seemed to make no difference. And as far as I can tell I have all the
current Office updates for OL 2003 SP3.

iTunes handles iPhones as well and you can synchronize your iPhone and
Outlook, transferring Contacts and Calendar back and forth. Apple just
installs the Outlook link automatically no matter what.
