I use Outlook 2003 in Vista Home Basic (all software purchased legitimately),
Comcast internet, for 7 months no problem, suddenly when I send an email I
get Task 'mail.comcast.net - Sending ' reported error (0x800CCC78):'Unable to
send the message. Please verify the e-mail address in your account
properties. The server responded: 550 5.1.0 Authentication required.' I
checked the address, it was correct. I deleted the account and entered it
anew, all to no result. Comcast Tech Support claims no idea. Thinks I should
reload Outlook.

Are you authenticating per Comcast's instructions? DId you change the server ports from 25 to the new one? Does Test Account Settings work?

Sounds like you are trying to send through their SMTP server from an account that is not logged onto their server.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. All
unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without
reading.

After furious head scratching, Mark E. Thurman asked:

Well, as is often the case with Windows, the problem has magically corrected.
The server port is back at 25 and everything is okay.

Thanks for the reply.
