Cannot select and open multiple files

I'm running Windows XP pro and for a while now when I try to open
multiple (media files) using the standard open file dialog box in
Windows media player 11 or winamp I get the following message:
"File not found. Please verify the correct file name was given."

If I open these same files in windows explorer they open perfectly.
What can be causing this and how can I resolve it. Thanks for the help
in advance.
