I've seen this two ways.
One: The system had picked up an internet worm, which had
trashed part of the OS. I had to run a repair from the
installation CD. Is your antivirus library up to date?
Two: I stupidly took the default option when looking at
permissions on the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory and reset
permissions on all files, leaving me with insufficient
access to W2K executables. The file search function was
one of the things that disappeared until I got the
permissions restored.
HTH. But don't be surprised if there's a third (and maybe
much simpler) cause.
