So, here's our problem.

This is specifically concerning us using Dell Optiplex
GX270s. When we get them we clear out the hard drives
then use Deploy Center to reimage the disks customized to
our specs. This particular model of computer has an image
built from the bottom up rather than based on older images
from other revisions/computer models.

Problem is, sometimes the computers have a problem with
those USB keychain drives where they will recognize but
not install until your rtclick in device manager and
update drive (it will find the driver automatically) or
sometimes it won't work at all. Concurrent with this
problem is if you click on the add hardware wizard it
gives you the error message mentioned in the subject line
and prevents further hardware installs. Any
ideas/comments? This seems to not be dependent on any
domain adding/group policies set that I seem to be aware
of.

Actually... As closely as XP is tied into the hardware layer now, it's
not a good idea to setup your system from and image unless it is the
same exact hardware configuration. There is a HAL built at system setup
and it must match the system it's running on. This could be your
problem... Maybe there is some little thing different on these systems
than on the machine that the image was built from, and it is causing
this problem, but it's not enough of a difference to prevent XP from
booting.

Hrm...I agree with that. And actually, these two systems
are identical (due to that very problem, when we get
system revisions or different models I build new images).
That's what's so perplexing. Short of not being in the
same box, it's all the same...

If this is any help, if I re-run sysprep on the machine
the problems disappear...profile issues? how?

We had this problem and it was caused by running Sysprep with th
"factory mode" option. Running Sysprep with this option caused all o
our ghosted laptops to have the Add New Hardware Wizard disabled.

The fix was to run Sysprep again on all the Ghosted laptops with jus
the -reseal option.

I am still researching this problem to find out more info.
