Hi

I have a virus which messed up my file associations. I cannot run any .exe
applications.
I have tried renaming regedit.exe to regedit.com but I cannot run .com
either .

Any suggestions

Thanks

Try here:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/exefile.htm

There is a link there to download fixreg.com from Grisoft.com if
needed. You might have to start the pc in Safe Mode to do the work.

I looked in the file association for com files and when I clicked on file
extention , advanced, open , edit it says
c:\windows\system32\uninstallset.pif""%1" %* .
The uninstallset.pif is not longer on my PC

Sounds like your machine is pretty messed up. Command.Com doesn't run?
You might need to change the registry entries from a remote/network
machine or from a parallel installation. You can also slave the disk in
another Windows 2000/XP machine to do the work but without knowing what
this virus is you should be careful that the host machine doesn't get
infected as well.

I am ecstatic. After spending the entire day trying to fix this problem Alan
Edwards from the XP general newsgroup saved my day in a second. Thanks for

We'll be ecstatic too, once you ensure us you've installed a good
antivirus package, a decent firewall, and so on. ;-)
