I am trying to restore a share to a new server. Some of the files restore ok, but alot of the files gives an error that says cannot restore SIS file. I am using Brightstore for backups. Any Ideas ? Please reply to (E-Mail Removed)

Hi -

Exact error messages are most useful for trying to determine what the cause
of a problem is; however, it sounds like the data you are trying to restore
was contained on a volume on a server that had RIS setup on it, and
therefore had the Single Instance Store (SIS) service running on the volume
that this data was sitting on.

The SIS service (also known as the groveler service) grovels the drive and
looks for duplicate files; if it finds duplicates, it places a copy of the
original file in the SIS Common Store folder, and replaces all instances of
it with a 4 KB reparse point (symbolic link). This is done to conserve
drive space; if you have multiple RIS images on the drive, many of the files
in these images may be contained in every image; by consolidating all the
common files into a single location (using 4kb reparse points in each of the
images to point to a single copy of the common file), a significant amount
of drive space can be gained.

If you are using a backup product that is SIS aware, it will backup the
actual file; if the product is not SIS aware, it will only back up the 4 KB
reparse point. It sounds like the backup was made by a product that is not
SIS aware.

If you still have the original SIS Common Store folder, or a backup of that
folder, you can probably salvage this; if not, then those files that
generate the error message are gone.

Here's a couple of articles that may help:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;299726

And if you are not actually using RIS and want to remove it from the server:

hth.
