It seems the trouble is not over yet. It is a continuation of previous
posts.

After I signed off the same problem came back on. No CMOS setup, F12 does
not work. I had to search for a solution again. I think Ctrl+F6 does the
trick. Brings up the CMOS message. I signed into my WinXP. Went to DELL
website, updated the BIOS from A3 to A8 for my GX-280. It is a 4 year old
machine, still very powerful since it was top of the line at the time I
purchased it. Just two day ago I bought a new DELL Dimensions T7400 and it
has a CPU with lower speed. It appears the CPU with 3.85Ghz are things of
the past. now it is 2.85 -- this is what I could get max. If I went higher
it would have delayed the delivery by 3 months.

Anyhow, I have neglected this computer for a long time. It is my home
machine, used primarily for emails. Now I want to revive it. So I updated
the BIOS via my second XP partition.

What changed:

CMOS messages come up. I can see: *Windows Vista* & *Earlier Versions of
Vista* but only only Earlier Versions with WinXP works. I can only get into
my Vista with safe mode.

Do I have to download BIOS also for my Vista partition? I thought it is
common to all partitions. Am I wrong?

As I said it is still possible to get into Vista with Ctrl+F6 trick it seems
(normal mode) but when I tried to download and install the BIOS on that
partition I could not do it because of an error message:

You do not have a permission. You have to sign in as administrator.

How can I do it? I am the Administrator.

Please help.

When you worte that I could not figure out your logic until now.

Why wait two years, when with Vista you can have your regret today?

Anyway, I have been using XP since day one and have not yet had even one
hint of a problem with it.


Now, that said...if the problem occured *only* after you updated the bios...
you might as well try re-flashing it with the bios that was know to work.

Be sure to have your machine on a UPS when you do so.

You might receive more detailed responses if you kept the thread together.
It's extremely difficult to piece together what you've done over a several
day period. Don't start a new thread when you are replying to previous
questions or suggestions.
