Cannot Resolve FQDN

I can ping hosts by name eg. server1 which returns an IP address but I
cannot ping server1.mycompany.com even though my DNS server has a
pointer record mapping the IP to server1.mycompany.com.

Any ideas?

What happens if you run nslookup and resolve both server1 and
server1.mycompany.com names? Do you get the results that you are expecting?
