Cannot reply to e-mails

Everything in Vista Mail (Home Basic) is working perfectly,
except that I cannot reply to any e-mail. The error message
produced is: "The message could not be sent. The
authentication setting might not be correct for your
outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail",
and read the "I'm having problems sending e-mail" section.
If you need help determining the proper server settings,
please contact your e-mail service provider."

I did not try this, as I am NOT having any problem sending
e-mail if I originate the message.

"The rejected e-mail address was '(E-Mail Removed)'.
Subject 'Re: (deleted detail which contains private info of
a third party), Account: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Server:
'smtp.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '530
authentication required - for help go to
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/sbc/dsl/mail/pop/pop-11.html',
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 530, Error Number:
0x800CCC78."

As my authentication works when originating outgoing
messages, I am confused by the above.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

You should be using port 465, with SSL, authentication required:

Having done all that, I cannot send any e-mail at all.
My ISP online help suggested I change everything back to the
original settings and I STILL cannot send anything at all.

I also have an @sbcglobal.net address, and those settings
work fine for me. Do you get an error message when you
try to send? If so, copy it and post it here.

I do get an error message; precisely the same as posted
below.
Thank you for your patience.

If the error is precisely the same as before then you did not
implement the recommended changes: port 25 should be
port 465, SSL should be turned on. Do you have "My server
requires authentication" checked?

I had the suggested changes in place (SSL, ports 465 & 995
and a server name change). Having done that, I could no
longer send e-mail at all (where before I was only unable to
to reply - I could send if I originated mail, or if I
forwarded). When I contacted Yahoo Mail help, they told me
to change everything back. After doing that (second)
change, I still could no longer send at all. In every
institution of recommended changes, I received precisely the
same error message. I did close and re-open Windows Mail
after each change, then check to be sure the new settings
were in place before retesting.
I feel I'm missing something obvious, but I'm jiggered if I
know what. Is there a ghost in the machine (deus ex
machina?)

Mr. VanderMolen, thank you for your efforts.
The error was a typo; I had two dots in the smtp server
name: smtp..att.yahoo.com.
I very cleverly duplicated this error when I made the second
set of changes.
All is now well, with the configuration you suggested.
Thank you MUCH.

It sounds like something in your WinMail is seriously corrupted.
At this point I can only recommend the drastic fix that
Steve Cochran suggests, wiping out the database: "Go to
Tools | Options | Maintenance | Advanced | Store Folder to find the message
store location. Then move everything under that Windows Mail directory to
another directory. Then restart WinMail and it will open fresh with nothing
in the database. You can then add your accounts and if they work correctly
then you can use File | Import | Messages and choose WinMail format and
point to the directory to which you moved the files."

Glad you got it figured out.
This is why I advocate doing a "copy and paste" on the error
message instead of trying to transcribe it manually.
