I have a document in which there is, what appears to be a table cell that
contains text that I cannot delete. I delete all the text around it and it
remains. I cannot even highlight it. Any ideas?

It could be a table or a textbox that's anchored in a header or footer, and then
dragged to the position where you see it (read
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/AnchorToHeader.htm for a description of how
to do this).

Try opening the header (right-click there and click the Edit Header popup), and
then try to select the cell/box/whatever.
