On my Windows XP machine, I have recently upgraded to a
motherboard with an on-board network interface. Although
the previous network adapter is no longer present, Windows
has kept its IP address assignment. The device is hidden
in normal mode, but appears in the device manager in safe
mode.
When I try to remove the adapter while in safe mode,
Windows gives me an error along the lines of "...this
device may be needed to boot..." and the uninstall fails.
Obviously, it is not needed to boot if it doesn't
physically exist.
I have tried to install the old NIC, but Windows
recognizes it as a "docking station" as opposed to an NIC.
Wierd.
How do I get rid of this device?
